Ontario Teachers' Strike: What Parents Need to Know

If you've spent any time on social media lately, you've probably seen posts about teachers' strikes, expiring contracts, barganing, and the possibility of labour disruptions this fall.

Naturally, many parents are asking the same questions.

The good news is that, as of today, there is no announced province-wide teachers' strike in Ontario.

So why is everyone talking about it?

The answer is that Ontario's major education union contracts expire on August 31, 2026, and negotiations for new agreements are now underway. This is a normal part of Ontario's collective barganing process However, because these negotiations can sometimes lead to job action, speculation tends to grow quickly online.

Here's what we know, and just as importantly, what we don't.

Why is Everyone Talking About a Strike?

The current collective agreements covering Ontario's major education unions expire on August 31, 2026.

That means the Province of Ontario, school board associations, and education unions are currently negotiating new agreements.

Several of Ontario's largest education unions, including those representing elementary teachers, secondary teachers, Catholic teachers, French-language teachers, and many education workers, have already begun bargaining the process and have publicly identified priorities such as:

• Student and staff safety

• Violence in classrooms

• Special education supports

• Mental health resources

• Staffing shortages

• Workload

• Compensation

These negotiations can take months to complete.

Does This Mean There Will Be a Strike?

No. At this point, there has been no announced province-wide strike in Ontario.

Negotiations are ongoing, and it's common for education unions to prepare for bargaining well before contracts expire. In previous bargaining rounds, unions have held strike votes or other forms of job action as part of the negotiation process, but those steps do not automatically mean schools will close.
